NEWS WATCH: COMFORT; A Digital Chair That Can Sense And Relieve the Pain
The Inada massage chair, soon to arrive in the United States, harnesses technology that makes the La-Z-Boy seem lazy indeed. Known as a ''medical chair'' in Japan, it uses infrared sensors to scan the user's physique. The chair then calculates the positions of the user's tsubo, pressure points where shiatsu therapists can adjust what they see as the flow of energy in the body.
Its maker, Family Inada, says that information on more than 100 body types is stored within the chair. The chair massages the back, ankles and legs, and in the higher-end model, the buttocks too. It is programmed with routines to relieve fatigue or stress or to address ills like sore shoulders.
